Cavity in the teeth Cavity in the teeth, or caries are damages that occurs when bacterial growth erodes the teeth over time. Bacteria occures naturally in the mouth, not all are bad. The bacteria that causes caries ferments sugars, and carbohydratyes casuing an acidic environment in the mouth that demineralizes the teeth. This is a natural prosses, and dosent necessaerly end with a hole that needs filling, since teeth have the capability to also remineralize. Damages occure when the balance is tipped towards the demineralization process. Why do we get holes in our teeth? The formation of cavities is a multifactorial process that can be cause by: inadequate hygiene, diet, underlying genetical issues, and autoimune diseases like diabetes. Certain oral medications can also contribute in tipping the balance to an acidic environtment in the mouth. Symptoms and indications Cavities in the teeth do not always cause symptoms, and are therefore most often discovered during the dental check-up by a dentist. Sometimes cavities in the teeth can cause symptoms such as an icing feeling when eating or drinking something cold, or hot. Other symptoms might include swelling, sharp pain when touching or knocking on the tooth aswell as simple chewing (see section for rootfilling) Treatment Treatment starts with diagnosing the stage of caries. Smaller cavities do not always hurt, and are sometimes first detected by X-rays. We categorize the diffent stages into: inicial, media, and profunda. Inicial (begining): Is the fist stage of caries and is often limited to the most outer layer of the tooth, the Enamel. The enamel is the hardest material in the body, even harder than bone. The enamel is special in that it has the capability to remineralize, and heal. Inicial caries can often be treated without drilling. Treatments often include specific hygenic instructions, lifesyle changes, special toothpaste, and topical applications. Symptoms: none, to mild. Media (medium size): Is the second stage, the caries has now reached the second layer of the tooth, reffered to as, dentin. Unlike enamel, dentin can not remineralize. Treteatment includes mechanical removal of infected tissue, and restoration of the missing parts of the tooth with a filling. Symptoms: none, mild, and severe Profunda (big/deep size): This is the last stage, the caries is now very big, deep, and close to the nerve. when caries has reached this stage one often has many of the above mentioned symptoms. Treatment includes mechanical removal of infected tissue, and sometimes even rotcanal filling, and extraction of tooth. Symptoms: mild, severe, can often be seen in mirror, and felt with your toung
Estetiikka on iso osa lähes kaikkea hammashoitoa, joten puhtaasti esteettistä hoitoa on hyvin vähän.
